They can tell you the difference between a water snake and a cotton mouth; but are unaware of the serious danger of vengeful snake spirits.
Allow me to present a couple examples of snakes with exceptionally potent ghosts that will fuck your world up….
Rattlesnake: The rattlesnake has the privilege of being the necklace and adornment of the Thunder Spirits among indigenous groups of the Southeastern United States. To harm one, is to bring the wrath of the thunder spirits; which will generally either destroy everything you own; or really fuck up your health.
The common black king snake - it was believed that if you killed this snake, it’s ghost would tell the other snakes, who would then put out a mob hit on you and your loved ones, until they were avenged. Keep your children close.
The coral snake belongs to witches; the old ones wear them as bracelets.
There’s a pattern here with snakes and jewelry; which will be familiar to those of you who are interested in Hindu iconography.
Some particular problems that are alleged to arise from killing snakes:
heart problems
fucked up teeth/meth mouth
rheumatism
back problems
reproductive harm
urinary tract infections
Some particular clans of Indigenous Peoples here have a taboo of keeping a snake in the home. When I was a kid, I was told stories of how when a rattlesnake was encountered among the ancestors, they would pray and make offerings of tobacco; asking it to stay with them, and tell the spirits how well they treated it; and generally asking for friendship and not getting bit on the ass or ankles.
This all hints at the very reason methods of allegedly producing live snakes in the body of an individual all require the snake to die angry.
We haven’t even considered the multitude of snake deities around the world….
Luckily, the ancestors have given us a remedy for the problem of snake ghost infestation. Across cultures as widespread as Africa and Indigenous America, if a snake was killed by accident or dire necessity; it was given a proper funeral one would give a beloved relative, complete with grave gifts.
